During the month of February we discussed diversity. In our classroom we discussed how we are all different and unique, and that is what makes our classroom special in its own way! We all have different personalities, talents, and skills to add "spice" to our classroom community. On Thursday we did an activity centered on the book, "The Crayon Box that Talked." First we drew a picture using only one color. We decided it was kinda boring and uncreative. Then, after we read the book, drew the same picture using MANY colors which made our picture more complete, real, and exciting! We compared our classroom to a box of crayons where each one of us is important in our own way :)
Teamwork!
During February we also practices teamwork several ways. One way was through the Sochi Winter Olympics. Students were assigned a country with a small group. They had a task each day of working as a team to research the medal count for their country, keep tallies, and fill in a graph. Students practiced taking turns, using the computer as a tool for research, and sharing responsibilities. Each day, teams received points based on the task completion. We had Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal team winners. Afterward we discussed what went well and also what was a struggle working as a team. Ask your student how their group did and why!
In addition to teamwork, we took on a 100 piece puzzle competition this past week! Each table group had a puzzle they began on Monday and had until Friday to complete. Again, we worked on all the qualities of teamwork in order to reach a common goal. 4 out of 7 tables completed their goal! One table even asked me if they could use persistence by continuing to work on it next week. Great persistence, teamwork, and striving for accuracy shown by all!
Comprehension Strategies
As you read with your student, it is important to check for understanding. We have been practicing this in class as a group, with partners, and even when we read to ourselves. To carry this into the home I am sending home a "tool" for you to use with your First Grader to check for understanding. This tool includes the following strategies:
- Make Connections: This reminds me of...
- Visualize: The picture in my mind...
- Ask Questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why?
- Infer: Read between the lines...be a detective!
Happy Birthday to Samuel T. on March 5th!
