This week your First Grader will begin bringing a Reading Bag and a Reading Log home. This reading bag will contain 2 books (Hot: I have read this with them and Cold: has not read yet, but at their level). These bags should be returned EVERY day so that students can read from them at school AND so they have them when I read with their group and make book switches. Also, please keep track of the books you read with them/parent initials on the Reading Log which will stay in the back pocket of their Red Folder. I check these every day and like to see what students read and who they read with :) We recommend at least 20 minutes of reading for 5 days/week in order for your student to grow as a reader. Find a consistent routine/time to make this an enjoyable & stress-free event. An example may be before dinner, after dinner, or before bed. Happy Reading!
Field Trip to the Zoo
The First Grades will taking a trip to the Detroit Zoo on October 23rd from 9:00am-2:00pm. Permission slips and notes will be coming home with your student on Monday. Please return permission slips/money by October 9th. Additionally, please reply on the permission slip if you would like to chaperone the trip. We will be taking all available chaperones :)
Rubric Scale
During the school day, we use the 1-4 rubric scale for students to assess their own understanding and for me to assess them. You may have noticed these numbers on papers being sent home. I encourage you to discuss/ask your student about their understanding using this scale as well. Here is a refresher about the scale:
1-This is tricky for me
2- I can do this with help
3- I can do this by myself.
4- I can do this by myself and tell you more/explain how to do this.
Love & Logic
Julie Peraino, our school social worker has provided a wonderful article which puts into perspective how we handle student failure/successes, and how we should handle it. This article emphasizes how important it is to focus on the successes our students have and not just the failures. You can find it on the Parents page of our classroom website: Parents
