Fancy Writing Pens
In Writer's Workshop we have begun to use pens for our writing pieces. We use these for two reasons: they can't erase what they wrote so I can see ALL their thinking AND this teaches them the importance of slowing down to think while we write. I gave each of them school supplied pens, BUT I am inviting students to bring in their own fancy writing pens if they would like :) The ink color does not matter and this is not required, but ask your child (if they haven't asked you already!) if they would like to bring in a Fancy Writing Pen :)
Reading Logs/Bags
This week your student will begin bringing home a reading bag containing 2-3 books and a Monthly Reading Log. One of the ways we reinforce responsibility in the classroom is by students showing me they have done reading at home. The best way for me to know this is by an adult filling in their reading log every night with: WHO they read to OR the TITLE of the book(s) the read OR WHERE they read.. Or you can do all if you choose. I check these daily and place stickers to show that I have seen this. Also, students earn a "clip up" in the morning by having this filled in. Please help support this by filling in each night your student reads (they can help with filling in too!). Keep in mind that this can be the books I send home in their reading bags, a book of choice from home (that is a good fit, do the 5 finger test!), or even E-Books like Raz Kids or Epic (more details on both of these will come home soon)! The best way a student can truly enjoy reading is by letting THEM choose what books they would like to read to you that night for about 15-20 minutes. Happy Reading!
Does your student know how to...
-How to tie their shoes? (Have them prove it to me in class to become a Shoe-per Hero!)
-When their birthday is? (month, date, year)
-What their address is? (including city)
If not, these may be helpful to practice throughout the school year!
