First Grade begins the Michigan K-2 Assessment this week. We will be taking the ELA assessment on Tuesday and the Math Assessment on Thursday. These will take about 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. A filling breakfast, healthy snack, and water will be especially important on these days. Remind them to do their First Grade BEST :) I discussed with them that there may be some really tricky parts on the assessment that they haven't learned yet. This is going to help us know what we need to work on this year and will show growth when we take it again in the Spring. It would be helpful to remind them of this as well so they don't get too overwhelmed. Thanks for your support!
Reading Logs/Bags
This week your First Grader will begin bringing home a reading bag containing 2 books and a Monthly Reading Log. One of the ways we reinforce responsibility in the classroom is by students showing me they have done reading at home. The best way for me to know this is by an adult filling in their reading log every night with: WHO they read with OR the TITLE of the book(s) the read. Or you can do both if you choose. I check these daily and place stickers to show that I have seen this. Also, students earn a "clip up" in the morning by having this filled in. Please help support this by filling in each night your student reads (they can help with filling in too!). Keep in mind that this can be the books I send home in their reading bags, a book of choice from home (that is a good fit), or even E-Books like Raz Kids! The best way a student can truly enjoy reading is by letting THEM choose what books they would like to read that night for about 15-20 minutes. Happy Reading!
Raz Kids
A note will be coming home with your students this week with login information for them to use RazKids at home. We use this in school on a weekly basis(1-2x per week) and it helps to use this as support at home as well. The note will give you some options of how your student can login (app and online version available). Also, there is an option for parent access so you can check in on how your student is progressing throughout the year. Let me know if you have any questions!
Fall Festival Baskets
At the Salem Fall Festival (October 21st), there are silent auction baskets which each classroom is in charge of donating items for. Our theme is BONFIRE. Items are due by October 18th. Send into school and I will pass them on to Mrs. Hartmann who is in charge of our basket. Thanks for your donations!
